FAQ

1.  Must order a Wall Portrait?   If you only want 5×7 and smaller prints you may be interested in booking a limited session instead.

Geitgey Photography’s custom sessions include a Wall Print or Canvas to display of your loved ones in a professionally prepared print for you and others to enjoy.  Our limited sessions for perfect for those wanting only small prints (5×7 or smaller) which can be printed locally.  The limited sessions are short sessions, only a few previews are made  and are available only when several sessions are scheduled at the same time and location.

2.  What are Reference Previews Prints?  The color reference prints included with your session provide you with a print from your files for comparison when you have your own printing done. We print your release for making reprints on this reference print as well.

3.  Why are the files sized to make 5×7 reprints? We size the files for making reprints 5×7 and smaller printing as this is a common “digital photography size.”  This size is perfect for making digital cards, announcements, wallets, scrapbooks, gift prints, and for small desk frames. We also include a set of the  files sized for web use. Our prices would be significantly higher if we included large files required to make wall prints. Because we consider our photography a creative endeavor and an expression of our artistry, we reserve making wall prints to our care.  Our Wall Prints are carefully printed by professional printers, textured, have protective coating, as well as additional retouching  and enhancements maybe added to wall prints. The wall prints are either mounted or stretched on canvas. Fine Art Prints may be printed on fine art papers.  These papers are archival and of professional quality.

4.  What is the difference between a limited use license (EULA) for prints I receive and a copyright release?  This is an excellent question.   EULA stands for “End Users Limited Agreement.”

Our  “EULA” gives you the right to make reprints of your images for personal non-commerical use.  It does not give you permission to re-sell the files or produce prints made from them for advertising, artistic uses, etc., to enter contests, or claim as your creation. It also llimits your reprints to size 5×7s and smaller.  If you make a larger print, for instance an 11×14, you would be breaking the terms of your agreement with us.  You may also put your file on digital frames up to 5×7.

We retain commercial  copy rights to our images, which includes the right to enter them contests and professional competitions, and use as in our portfolio as samples and in advertising. Of course, we respect the wishes of those who do not want their prints displayed in our advertising endeavors, etc.  This agreement is in our model release agreement with you. You may convert your files to sepia or black and white prints using your own programs or a print lab’s option, but are requested in the EULA to refrain from manipulating the the files and making derivative works from them.  As photographic artists, we retain the rights to “layouts, designs, and “artistic” interpretations and manipulations” and derivative works of  our files.

5.  Why I am not allowed to enter contests with images of my family or children in the EULA terms?  We do not give contest rights because the current trend in contests is to require the submitter of images/files submitted to a contests to agree to release “all copyrights” over to those sponsoring the contest. This often includes those entries not winning as well as the winners.  The sponsors may, then, turn around and use the files as they wish without your permission or our permission and in some cases without payment when it would be reasonable to expect commercial uses to do so.  Although it may be flattering to have your image used, it is not wise to give up control of how it is used and it not equitable for large companies to use images without payment.  Many newspapers are also requesting a full release of all the copyrights to an image from individuals who submit images.  If you want to enter a contest, please contact us to review the contest terms and we will consider whether to grant you an exception to your EULA.

6.  May I use my files for digital files, slides shows, etc.,? Yes, this is one of the reasons we have moved to offering digital files as our clients uses for digital files have changed.

7.  How should I store and care for my files?

We are now transferring the files to you directly to your computer via digital downloads from our computer.  There is an extra charge for us to prepare a CD.  By downloading the file directly you to save will them directly to the hard drive of your computer. We suggest that you then back them up several ways.  You may, then, put them on a thumb drives/s, burn a DVD or CD  as well as put them  in off-site storage, a firebox, or even an online location/album.

We will provide you a CD for $25.00 if you wish us to do so, plus $5.00 to mail it, to prepare the CD.

The download will be available from our site for 2 weeks for you access it.  Please check your files and if you purchase multilple files do make sure you have them all. If you have more than one computer, you may want to consider a download of your files to each computer and other family members.  Each year you should back up your files and any CDs, etc. that you have made and update the files on newest technology.  Just as DVDs and CDs  have replaced the tapes for music, technology, equipment, and programs change rapidly.  A few years from now what you have stored your files on may not work on newer programs or players.

8.  Why are my “I”-files for Internet use and e-mail smaller files and why do they have a watermark?  The smaller size of the files allows for much faster loading of the files for viewing on the internet.  The current resolution of monitors, cell phones, etc., is 72 dpi, where as a DPI around 150-200 is needed to reproduce prints.  Also, these smaller dimensions tends to discourage unknown parties who might view your images online and decide to copy them to their sites without your permission or knowledge.  Furthermore, the our watermark: ©2008 www.geitgey.com notifies these potential web trollers that the images has a copyright. The federal government has large fines for removing copyright notices; many internet providers will quickly cooperate when notified of an unauthorized use of a photograph when it has a copyright symbol.  It will not completely protect you from an unknown party taking and using your images without your permission or knowledge, but it discourage them doing so. The watermark is printed at a low opacity across the center of the image, because that way it cannot be easily cropped off. We recommend that when posting images to blogs, Myspace, FaceBook.com, etc, and other social sites that you keep your image sizes smaller. Most of the blog files are about 3×2 inches when viewed at 100%.  They will appear clearer and post faster in smaller dimensions, but will pixelate as they are enlarged or printed.

NOTE:  We also really appreciate it when you post a comment when adding pictures to the blogs and social sites that Geitgey Photography created the images.  We also invite you to link to us a friend on Facebook and send us a link to see your blog posting.  (We do not have a MySpace Account.)  We enjoy seeing how you share & use your images.

9.  What if I loose my files?  Does Geitgey Photograpy keep a back up?  We usually retain our files for 90 days on our computer.  After that period of time we archive the files to save space.  IF we have the files available on our computer we charge $50 to re-post them for you to download or $80.00 to burn a CD and mail it out to you.  IF the files have been archived, the charge is $100 to re-post them or $130 to provide a CD. We do not guarantee the availability of providing this service and encourage you to make back ups on your computer and save them off-site as well.  This is the charge for multiple files. For a single file it is less.

10.  Can I order wall prints at a later date?   You may order wall prints and special products within 90 days of your session.  If you advise us of plans to order wall prints beyond that date please let us know so we can work with you and delay archiving the files.

11.  What if I want 8×10s instead of 5×7s from my files.   You may order 8×10 prints from us during the 90 days following your session. The cost per print depends on the quantity you need. You may order any size print from us, including 5×7s and smaller as well. We can arrange to extend this time limit if you advise us in advance.

12.  I need to use a file for a business promotion.  How do I arrange that?  We normally allow limited commerical use of your images from the session for uses such as business cards, newpaper announcment of a promotion, award, etc.  Please contact us regarding your needs.  Large  scale use and quantity reproductions, political campaigns, book jackets, covers, etc., do not fall in non-commercial use and require permission and may require payment to extend your EULA. In addition, most printers or publishers are aware of this and require a release from the photographer. A credit line and ©notice is appropriate to include in many uses where an image is used as well.

Note:  If we provided unlimited copyrights and reproduction rights to all our digital file sessions, our fees would need to be much higher.

13, Will my files be retouched?  Basic retouching and color correction is included when your files are presented in the gallery for viewing and for the selection of your wall prints or other enlargements or products.  We soften wrinkles and soften or minimize small scars, bags under the eyes, and other small flaws as well as minor acne before you view your images.

There are additional charges for removing braces, hair and clothing correction, background changes, head swapping, extensive glass glare, teeth, etc.  We will discuss your concerns or requests regarding retouching.  We can also do glamourized retouching you if you wish.  Many retouching services are less than $25.00 and once they are applied to a file they are permanent corrections.

Do ask if you have a concern or request in this area.

14.  If you should happen to take more than the maximum number of previews from my session, may I add the files and a reference print to my order?  Yes, if we go over the maximum images to show you, we ask you to select which ones you want for your files and reference prints.  Additional files (over the maximum included in your package) and a reference print for each one are included at only $30 each or 5 for $100.

15.  You showed me an antique sepia coloring (or other variation) of my image that I loved.  Can I order a 5×7 file made this way?

If you prefer our sepia conversions over what is available to you through your printer, we will do our sepia conversion.  The charge is  $25.00 for each file converted.  You will still keep your color version as well.  Although many consumer labs now offer black and white and sepia conversions, we have access as well as have created some awesome variations that are really beautiful that are not readily available to you.  If you want all your files reproduced in the same “version” we can offer you a package price for the conversions. We cannot guarantee that your lab or printer will reproduce our sepia colors exactly.

16.  You showed me a holiday card, a baby announcement or a save the date card with my images that I just love. Why is that not included in my files?

We like to show you some of the potential things that can be created by us with the images we create.  Many of our layouts are purchased from artists and their terms of use do not allow us to re-sell the file. In other cases we have invested our time into designs. Our charges start at $5.00 to add a name or date to a file and go up as we design wedding announcements, save-the-date cards, custom albums, layouts, signature albums

for guest books, memory books, etc.

When purchasing your digital files you may either choose to do-it-yourself or contract our services to do designs and prints for you.

We also do not sell the files or release the copyright on our fine art images, which may be created from your session images. These prints in any size may only be ordered directly from us.
